Before Fibreglass
From the umiaks of Labrador’s Thule people to the longliners of Newfoundland’s commercial fisheries, Before Fibreglass: Wooden Boats of Newfoundland and Labrador displays the role of the wooden boat in the province’s history, economy and cultural way of life. Designed to tell the story of wooden boats in our province from prehistory to today, this exhibition is enriched with historic photos, art, stories, poems, songs and artifacts.
The Indeavour Saga
The Indeavour Saga, curated by Hilary Cass, tells the story of the voyage from Cupids to Trinity Bay, John Guy’s contact with the Beothuk people and the spread of European settlement. A scale model of the Indeavour, constructed by Robert Halliday, was built using written documentation, records of vessel construction of the period and sound logic and reasoning.
Gander River Boat
The Gander River Boat Exhibition tells the story of how and why this boat was built, and highlights three locals builders who continue to build them: Basil Gillingham, Lester Vivian and Eugene Saunders.
